How to Avoid Damaging Your Greatest Investment
When a roof leaks or is damaged, it affects the whole home. It is the same with roof repair or re-roofing. The preparation and the replacement process can cause a bit of chaos before the final product and complete security happen. Getting on a roof or dealing with high places is always a risky business, but when a full roof replacement is happening there are many moving parts to be aware of.
Below are some lists of ways a homeowner can guard their home and property against damage when roof replacement is a necessity.
Preparing for Installation
There are things that need to be done all over the home, both inside and outside, in order to be prepared for roofers. These areas include the following:
- Patio: Remove all patio furniture to prevent damage from old roofing.
- Walls: Remove all wall hangings to prevent their falling and breaking.
- Attic: Take everything out of the attic to give workers an open area.
- Pool: If you have a pool, cover it to prevent detritus from falling in.
- Landscaping: Have any gardening or landscaping projects completed prior to roof installation.
Not only will these preparations benefit you, but the roofing contractors as well. It gives them space to work.
What to Do During the Installation
On the day of installation, there are several things that need to be done as well. Some of these are the responsibility of the roofing company and some fall to the homeowner.
- Cars: Parking cars away from the house prevents damage to the homeowner’s vehicles and gives the roofers the space they need for their vehicles and for working.
- Attic: The attic space has already been cleared, but the contractor will likely put down a tarp or some other form of protection to protect the attic space and keep it fairly clean.
- Landscaping: Any garden spaces that are directly next to the house should be covered with plastic.
Preparing the Inhabitants
Give your family a heads up about what to expect from the roof installation. If there are children in the home, outside play is going to be off-limits for the day. Make them aware of the dangers involved in the project and share the expectations for the sequence of events and for behavior. Having some special activities prepared might be a good idea. Sit back, enjoy a cold beverage, and let the roofers do their job.

Clear communication is important in any relationship, even professional ones. Make your contractor aware of your expectations and they can tell you whether or not those are reasonable for a particular project. If there is something you don’t understand, don’t hesitate to ask.
